ACLU UNIT PLANS VIDEO, SPEAKER, GENERAL MEETING
Monday, Sept 26, 7pm, MJC, Forum 110
Police tactics, the so-called "Patriot Act" and election of an expanded board will share the spotlight when the Stanislaus County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union holds its membership meeting Monday (9/26). Mark Schlossberg, San Francisco ACLU staff attorney who specializes in law enforcement tactics, will discuss racial profiling and other abuses alleged in the Modesto-Ceres area last Christmas season. He will be preceded by a 28-minute ACLU video about the domestic surveillance legislation passed after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York City, authorizing law enforcement to monitor citizen medical and library records. Chapter chairperson Tracy Herbeck will lead a brief business meeting which will include expansion of the chapter executive board from 12 to 18 nominating committee choices who must be approved by a membership vote. The meeting, marking two years of defending the Bill of Rights in Stanislaus County, will start at 7 p.m. in Room 110 of the Modesto Junior College Forum Building. The chapter is currently 348 members strong.
