A Modesto police officer shot a man suspected of pointing a gun at cars and people late Sunday.
According to police, the officer shot the man, later identified as 22-year-old Andres Gonzales of Modesto, just before midnight at Fifth and I streets.
Police said people started calling 911 at 11:32 p.m., reporting a man with a gun on Fourth and I streets. Officers arriving at the scene found a man matching the suspect's description in the alley behind the convenience store at 5th and I.
When the suspect saw the officers he began running north in the alley toward J Street, police said. He was running with another man, later identified as Jessie Huerta, 20, of Modesto.
When they reached J Street, Huerta ran west toward Fourth Street and Gonzales ran east toward Fifth, police said. An officer stopped at Fifth and J Street ordered Gonzales to stop. The officer, whose name was not released, reportedly saw Gonzales reaching for a gun in his waistband and shot him once in the upper torso.
Police said they found a loaded .38 caliber revolver in his waistband. Gonzales is in a local hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
Officers arrested Huerta without incident; investigators said both men face possible charges of participating in a criminal street gang, and Gonzales will face weapons charges.
The officer involved in the shooting is on administrative leave, standard procedure in all officer-involved shootings.
