*Haven't we heard this before? Modesto police shoot knife-wielding man www.modbee.com From The Modesto Bee Newsroom BEE STAFF REPORTS Last Updated: August 7, 2006, 09:20:50 AM PDT Modesto police shot a man armed with a knife during a fight at a north Modesto home, Sgt. Craig Gundlach said today. The shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. Sunday at 3500 Longbridge Drive, north of Standiford Avenue between Tully and Carver roads. Authorities received a 911 call from Thomas Souza, 39. He was whispering, saying he was hiding in a closet. He told dispatchers he had been assaulted and his attacker was armed with a knife and still in the house. When three officers arrived Souza ran out to meet them Gundlach said. Mellron Johnson, 37, of Modesto chased Souza and was confronted by police. The officers ordered Johnson to drop the knife, Gundlach said. Instead, Johnson moved toward them in what Gundlach described as a threatening manner. The officers opened fire, striking Johnson. He was taken to a Modesto hospital and underwent surgery. He was listed in serious condition, Gundlach said. None of the officers was injured. Their names were not released. Police said Johnson lives at the Longbridge Drive home with at least six other people. Witnesses told police he had been drinking most of the day and was upset following arguments with his girlfriend.
