Statement of Support for the Anti-HR 4437 Protests on Crows Landing Road in Modesto from the D.A.A.A. Collective
May Day is a day that is based upon anarchist, and militant labor resistance against capitalism, the state, and inhumane systems of domination and control. In 1886, strikers, anarchists, and those calling for an 8-hour day, and other basic labor/human rights staged a rally in Chicago. When police attacked the rally, someone threw a bomb into the crowd of police, (some suspect that it was an paid agent), and killed 8 police officers. The cops opened fire on the crowd, and killed many more protestors, and 8 anarchist organizers were arrested. While no evidence was ever shown that concluded that any of those arrested threw the bomb, they were convicted based on their immigrant status, and their anarchist politics, and the fact that they were militant organizers within the working class. Several were hanged, one committed suicide before police could kill him, and others spent many years in jail. Ever since, May 1st has been a historical day of protest and organizing against the system of capitalism.
This May Day, the working class of America, and immigrant workers are once again under attack. While on one hand, business and landholders want to create a system, (Guest Worker Program), where immigrant workers can work in near slave labor conditions for several years with passes, (without the right to organize, and fight for better conditions or wages), other racist politicians have other ideas. They want to use the recent wave of anti-immigration feelings as a chance to get more votes, by passing HR 4437, that will make just crossing the border and being "illegal", a felony, along with anyone that helps 'illegal" immigrants. Also, not just those crossing the boarder could be deported, but everyone that is a part of their family. The proposed legisation also further militarizes the border, which every year results in the death of many people, as workers cross it looking for work.
Global capital, which has moved jobs from the US into countries like Mexico, (costing US workers their jobs, not immigrants), also forces immigrant workers to choose between working low paying jobs, or going across the boarder, to seek work in the US. Capitalism in itself has created these problems, not our fellow workers, and we should respond in kind. Solidarity with all other workers, and class struggle against the system of wage slavery and private property!
But resistance is still fertile. The self-organization of students in local high schools, shows that the exploited can come together, and collectively strike and work towards social transformation of their communities. The recent Homeland Secruity/ICE raids also show how determined the government is to try and get people not to go out on May 1st against HR 4437. While the government and bosses may try and use fear and terror against working people, we must use solidarity and class unity against them in kind!
See you in the streets!
